What exactly is an Alpaca?

Updated: Apr 5, 2020

Other than the cutest things ever, what is an Alpaca? For one, it is not a Llama. People get them confused often. You can see the below graphic for some differences.

But, for real, Alpacas are much smaller than their Llama counterparts, about half of the size. Llamas are used for guarding and herding sheep and Alpacas. Alpacas are raised for their amazing Fiber. I'll have a blog later on that will go into detail how wonderful their fiber really is. However, they are both from the Camelid family. The Alpaca Owners' Association provided some fun facts about Alpaca (below).

We have decided to start with Huacayas. They are the Alpaca that are so fluffy they look like stuffed animals (that can sometimes spit). They are very quiet animals that make this adorable humming sound. We will be sure to catch that on video and share it with our fans.

Alpacas are also super safe as far as livestock goes. They don't bite or headbutt. They only have bottom teeth, and no horns, hooves or claws. They can kick from time to time. While it will sure leave a bruise, they don't kick hard enough to do any real damage.

Alpacas also NEED to be with a herd. They can literally die from loneliness. But it is really important to separate the males from the females. Males are literally too interested in their female counterparts so for everyone's safety it is best to keep them separated.

They don't eat much. They are grazers and typically eat the provided grass. Hay, pellets, and supplements can be provided to complement their nutritional intake. There is of course other costs such as vaccinations, medication, shearing, toe trimming, teeth trimming, and others.

They poop in communal piles so it is easier to clean up after them. Their poop is often called "Alpaca Gold" and I will explain that more thoroughly in future blog posts.

I hope this helped answer some of your questions about Alpacas. Please comment if you have additional questions I can answer in future blog posts.

Lol. Thanks Chrissy. Llama's have their purpose, if you like Norwegian death metal....but really, Llamas are protective and able to defend themselves and others. Cute, cuddly Alpacas are not.
